A post hole digger is a tool used to dig post holes. It consists of two shovel blades hinged in a jaw-like arrangement. Each shovel blade has its own handle. The handles are held together when striking the ground. When held together the blades are forced apart. Once the blades have penetrated the ground the handles are pulled apart and the jaw closes. This retains the dirt so that it can removed from the hole.
